Double Sided

This Saturday, I got to experience the most amazing night of dance! TITAS Presents closed out their 2017-2018 season with Parsons Dance Company. I got to see my amazing friends and Point Park University alumni pour their heart out onto the Winspear stage.

I’m calling this blog post Double Sided because I literally played both my roles this weekend. As most of you may know, I have a double major. I am working towards a BFA in Dance with a concentration in Modern and a BS in Sports, Arts, and Entertainment Management. Because I have friends in the company, I got to play the dancer and administrator.

It was really interesting watching my two worlds collide. Most dancers know me as Joi, the dancer. And my co-workers, the intern. Last night, they both got to see me interact with the other. And I’ve come to the conclusion that that’s how I always want it to be.

I used to think that when I left dance and moved onto my next chapter in life, I would no longer be a dancer. That is actually the complete opposite of how it’s going to be. Once a dancer, ALWAYS a dancer. No matter how far we stray from actually preforming.

Every week I learn something new and valuable at my internship and this one was by far one of my favorites. You can always learn how to write a grant or put together a financial spreadsheet but lessons like this can’t be taught. You shouldn’t suppress one part of your life to satisfy the other.

So, be the dancer AND the administrator. Or be the scientist AND the performer. You have no limits on what you can become. Just because you move on from dance doesn’t mean you complete forget it. Who knows, the connection could lead you to somewhere great!
