Worth It All
My week basically started the same as all my other ones. I did some basic office work and research for future grant applications. But, it ended the perfect way. This is an unusually long season. Most of TITAS Presents seasons end before June. This year, we have performances until June 30th. This is a bonus for me but hard work for everyone.
Alonzo King LINES Ballet, one of my favorite companies ever, ended their season in Dallas at the beautiful Winspear Opera House. Alonzo King LINES Ballet is a celebrated contemporary ballet company that has been guided since 1982 by the unique artistic vision of Alonzo King. Alonzo King’s visionary choreography, brought to life by the extraordinary LINES Ballet dancers, is renowned for connecting audiences to a profound sense of shared humanity.
The company did just that. We found humanity in their movement. And suddenly, it all became worth it. The comments and revelations from audience members let me know that all the work that TITAS does is vital to our community. Art affects people, in good and bad ways. This time, it literally took our breath away.
This is why the arts are so important to me. There’s nothing in the world that can make you feel like dance does. From the little girls and boys imitating what they saw the professionals doing to seeing patrons smiling faces leaving the theater, there’s nothing like it.
I encourage you to get out and experience dance and the arts this summer. It will open your eyes to a world you have never known. Organizations like TITAS work hard to make sure that communities are being exposed to performances like LINES. To keep the arts alive, you have to show up and support it. Don’t let something so essential to our lives die out. I promise, it will always be worth your while.
